Origins of America

BOOK :  THE FEDERALIST PAPERS
by  Clinton  Rossiter

A Mentor Book
New American Library Inc.
P.O. Box 999
Bergenfield, N.J.  07621

Must reading again if you haven't read it in the last 20 years.  Excellent introduction by Mr. Rossiter.

The message of The Federalist Papers is: "...no happiness without liberty, no liberty without self- government, no self-government without constitutionalism, no constitutionalism without morality -  and none of these 'goods' without stability and order."

If you can't read all the "papers" themselves, at least read and contemplate the Introduction and the Contents sections.

BOOK : GEORGE  WASHINGTON : A  LIFE
By  Willard  Sterne  Randall

Henry Holt & Company
115  West 18th St.
New York, N.Y. 10011

There are moments in human history it seems when circumstances bring together elements in such a fashion that a rarely occuring opportunity is presented. Mankind can be advanced or hindered by it, it can inflict suffering or eleviate suffering. Often the opportunity is not immediately recognized for its potential. Reaction to it by the leaders of the moment may be only the result of instinct, and instinct ebbs and flows to the gravity of character. Such were the times in the America of the 1770's and ' 80s.

They wanted to make George Washington a king... he refused !  There's no question he possessed the same human frailties that we all do but, his development of character was far beyond most mortal men and his unselfish vision for the country lead us thru a most trying time in circumstances offering little hope for success.

Contrast for a minute the human history that followed the decisions of two men: Washington, an unleashing of the human spirit thru religious freedom, the creation of huge private wealth under the free market system, the highest standard of living for the average person the world has ever achieved, the ability to stand down histories tyrants...and you can go on from there! Then there was Lenin and the creation of the Soviet Union. Everything the direct opposite. If you need to refresh your memory on the human carnage caused by the system he championed, I would refer you to the book by Zbigniew Bryzinski, Out of Control  . He documents this attempt in social engineering that cost over 100 million their lives, with many millions today still living under repressive systems of government of the Soviet model.

Two men. One with character...one without ! A moment in history...a first step taken...a course set..
